A Thursday afternoon fire in Helen displaced two residents and killed a family pet.
The fire was dispatched at 12:16 p.m. on January 26. Units from Helen Fire and Rescue responded to a residence on Maloof Street. The White County Fire Department and Lee Arrendale provided automatic aid.
Helen Fire Chief Jody Prickett said an employee with Windstream called in the fire to 911.
When firefighters arrived, they found fire coming from the third-floor windows. The crew made a quick interior attack and primary search. The fire was contained to the third floor and attic.
Prickett said the initial report was that there was a subject inside. They later got confirmation that all occupants were out of the residence but that there were dogs and a cat inside. Firefighters searched for the animals and safely located three dogs but found the cat dead.
Prickett said Emergency Medical Service personnel tried to revive the cat but could not.
According to Chief Prickett, the cause of the fire is under investigation.
