“Horrific!” That’s how motorists who passed by the scene described it. On Sunday afternoon, July 16, five people, including two children, ages 5 and 6, were killed when a Corvette and SUV collided at the intersection of GA 365 southbound and Mt. Zion Road.
The fatal crash occurred around 3:30 p.m. and shut down the highway for nearly five hours as crews worked the fiery scene. There were no survivors.
Troopers from Georgia State Patrol Post 7 in Toccoa investigated the crash. According to their preliminary report, Mitchell Boggs, 58, of Marietta, was driving a Corvette southbound on GA 365 in the right lane. As he approached Mt. Zion Road, a Ford Explorer driven by Avonlea Holtzclaw, 29, of Dahlonega, was attempting to cross the southbound side of GA 365 onto Mt. Zion Road.
The Corvette struck the Explorer on the right front side, causing both vehicles to catch on fire. The crash killed Boggs and Holtzclaw and an unidentified passenger traveling in Boggs’ vehicle. In addition, Holtzclaw young son and daughter died.
“Terribly sad.” That’s how Elizabeth Nguyen described the scene she witnessed near her home on Mt. Zion Road.
“I was driving home when we saw smoke coming from near our house, it was right on the end of our road. We helped direct traffic away until a police officer came,” says Elizabeth Nguyen.
Law enforcement reopened the highway near the crash site at 8:10 p.m. Sunday.
Habersham County Coroner Kasey McEntire expressed the sentiments of many, saying, “My heart hurts for those families this evening.”
Sunday’s fatal crash occurred in the same area where a wreck killed an Alto woman and her 5-year-old nephew in October 2021.
