A former Jackson County Sheriff’s deputy turned himself in at the jail where he used to work after being charged with using excessive force on an inmate.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation charged John Pursley, 53, of Jefferson, with two counts of simple assault and one count of violating his oath of office for allegedly getting into a fight with an inmate.
The GBI says Pursley turned himself in at the Jackson County Jail without incident on May 12.
On May 10, the sheriff’s office asked the GBI to investigate the alleged incident. That investigation indicated Deputy Pursley physically assaulted an inmate in the jail after the two of them got into an argument.
The GBI’s investigation continues. Once it’s complete, the agency says it will provide its findings to the Jackson County District Attorney for possible prosecution.
