“Everyone makes mistakes”: Habersham Sheriff provides traditional Thanksgiving meal for detainees

Thanksgiving family dinner includes food and decorations

CLARKESVILLE, Ga. — While Thanksgiving is traditionally a time for gathering with family, detainees at the Habersham County Jail will mark the holiday with a traditional turkey dinner and a message of reflection this year.

Habersham County Sheriff Robin Krockum emphasized that the holiday offers a necessary moment for perspective, regardless of a person’s current situation.

“Everyone makes mistakes and, despite their individual circumstances, we should all be thankful for something,” said Sheriff Krockum. “One reason we celebrate Thanksgiving is reflection.”

A reminder of due process

It’s important to remember the legal status of those currently in custody. Being arrested or being “in jail” does not mean an individual has been convicted of a crime.

For some currently housed at the facility, their presence is a matter of financial circumstance rather than a final legal judgment; some detainees cannot afford to bond out to be with their families during the holiday season.

The holiday menu

The meal, which will be served personally by HCSO jailers, includes a full spread of traditional holiday favorites. The menu features:

  • 5 oz Turkey
  • 1/2 Cup Gravy
  • 3/4 Cup Cornbread Dressing
  • 1/2 Cup Mashed Potatoes
  • 1/2 Cup Green Beans
  • 1 Baked Garlic Roll
  • 1 Beverage
  • 1 Piece of Pumpkin Spice Cake for dessert

No additional cost to taxpayers

Despite the menu upgrade, the Sheriff’s Office confirmed that the holiday dinner will not affect the department’s budget. The meal is created by the same food vendor that provides inmates with their standard daily nutrition, and the vendor is providing the holiday spread at no extra cost to the county.
