A Mt. Airy man is behind bars charged with trafficking meth and other drug offenses after leading law enforcement on a car chase through Cornelia.
A Habersham County Sheriff’s deputy stopped Jonathan Pitts for a minor traffic violation around 4:35 p.m. Tuesday on GA 385 near Camp Creek Road.
“As the Deputy was approaching the vehicle the driver fled,” says HCSO Lt. Matthew Wurtz.
The officer pursued Pitts on Highway 385 toward Cornelia. He turned left onto Clarkesville Street and then onto Elrod Street. The chase ended when the black Ford Focus Pitts was driving crashed near the intersection of Elrod and Chase Road.
The deputy arrested the 31-year-old Pitts and charged him with numerous offenses including trafficking meth, possession of heroin, possession of less than 1 ounce of marijuana, possession of THC oil, probation violation, fleeing and attempting to elude, obstruction of an officer, and several traffic violations.
He’s currently in the Habersham County Detention Center awaiting a bond hearing.
There were no other vehicles involved in the chase and Pitts’ vehicle was the only vehicle damaged in the crash, Wurtz says.
