The Clarkesville Police Department has announced a new traffic pattern for Lockwood Street and stepped-up enforcement in school zones.
Lockwood Street in Clarkesville is now a one-way street, flowing from West Water Street to Monroe Street (GA 115).
Clarkesville Police Chief Danny Clouatre says the change is part of an ongoing effort to improve traffic flow and enhance pedestrian safety. He urges drivers to pay close attention to new signage and road markings, and allow extra time as they adjust to the change.
Residents and commuters are encouraged to share this information with others who frequently travel the area.
School zone safety enforcement begins August 8

Also, to promote safety, Clarkesville police officers will begin increased patrols and enforcement in school zones starting the first day of school, Thursday, August 8.
Key Safety Reminders:
Reduced Speed Limits: Speed limits in school zones are strictly enforced during posted hours.
No Cell Phone Use: Distracted driving, especially near schools, poses a serious risk. Keep your full attention on the road.
Pedestrian Right-of-Way: Watch for children crossing the street and obey crossing guards and traffic signals.

Bus Safety: Never pass a stopped school bus with flashing lights. It’s illegal and dangerous.
Chief Clouatre says officers will be monitoring school zones closely and issuing citations for violations.
“This effort is not just about enforcement – it’s about protecting lives,” he said. “Please do your part to help keep our community safe.”
