A Cleveland man was arrested after a brief chase from Habersham into White County Friday night.
Habersham County Sheriff’s Office HEAT Unit Sgt. Kris Hall said he observed a truck and another vehicle traveling almost 30 mph over the posted speed limit on GA 105/Cannon Bridge Road at 8:48 p.m. on Oct. 27.
Hall said when he attempted to pull over the Ford pickup truck, the driver continued at a high speed and ran the stop sign at GA 105 and Highway 115. The fleeing driver then passed a vehicle on a double yellow line entering White County, said Hall.
According to the sheriff’s office, as the driver attempted to turn left onto GA 254, the truck traveled through the grass at Chattahoochee Grocery, narrowly missing a large steel signpost. The truck continued across GA 254 along the driveway of the Dollar General store before jumping the curb and coming to rest in a foliage-filled ravine.
Hall’s patrol vehicle did not make contact with the pickup truck, the sheriff’s office says.
The pickup truck driver, 19-year-old Hunter Kennon Flores, was arrested at the scene and charged with failure to maintain lane, defective tires, failure to obey a stop sign, reckless driving, racing, improper passing in no passing zone, two counts of speeding, and fleeing or attempting to elude a police officer.
Flores was booked at the Habersham County Detention Center and released from jail on $16,850 bond. The second vehicle was not located.
