A Heaven-mindset

Time. Treasure. Talent. These were the three words that my leader had me write on an index card when I was in 10th grade. I was in West Virginia on a mission trip sitting amongst my friends and listening to my leader give a devotion before we headed out to our project sites. He taught from Matthew 6:19-21, which says, “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

In today’s society, time is a highly coveted commodity. People, activities, social media, television, and more are in a relentless battle for our time. How do we determine what takes priority? Treasure is also difficult to protect. We are oversaturated with options for how to spend money.  Finally, our talents are often underappreciated, and we are the biggest culprits.  Too often we sell ourselves short because we do not think that our God-given talents are enough to contribute in today’s highly competitive society. So how do we use these things for the glory of God? How do we steward our resources in such a way that our decisions point to Jesus instead of towards the things of this world? To whom or to what do our hearts belong?

Jesus is saying here that the way we steward our resources is a direct indication of whom or what we serve. Love of money or selfishness with time and possessions are traps that are entirely too easy for us to fall into. Our culture feeds into the lie that your money is yours, your time is yours, and your talents are for your benefit.  Jesus takes this idea and flips it upside down when He says that we ought to store up treasures in Heaven, treasures that are intangible and not of this world. This passage in the Bible should affect the way that we steward our resources. It should challenge us to be generous with our time, stopping to listen when a friend is in need instead of staying busy all the time. It should challenge us to give in extraordinary ways, open up our homes, and share our possessions.  Finally, it should challenge us to get involved in our community and congregations, using our talents to serve and encourage those around us. Our actions and decisions say to others that our hearts belong to Jesus or that our hearts belong to the things of this world.

So, with this in mind, let’s live starting today with a Heaven-mindset. Let’s consider that our treasures on earth pale in comparison with those that await us in heaven if we are wise in how we steward what God has given us. Our time, treasure, and talents are on loan from our Heavenly Father who challenges us to use these gifts for His glory. Let’s be encouraged today to love graciously, live generously, and serve selflessly, storing up treasures that Jesus promises will last forever.

Meeting Minds: Sir Winston Churchwill

When we meet the minds of others, we can better understand one another. Today, meet the mind of Sir Winston Churchwill, a British statesman who was the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1940 to 1945 and again from 1951 to 1955.

“Success is stumbling from failure to failure with no loss of enthusiasm.” – Sir Winston Churchwill

Like a watered garden

Did you know God wants us to be happy? Joyful? Cheerful? He wants us to have an abundant life – Philippians 4:19, “And my God will supply every need of yours according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus.”

That can be difficult when you believe the odds are stacked against you.

Today, take a moment to celebrate who God is in your life. Here are some scriptures to help.

Nehemiah said, “Go and enjoy choice food and sweet drinks, and send some to those who have nothing prepared. This day is holy to our Lord. Do not grieve, for the joy of the Lord is your strength.” -Nehemiah 8:10.    How we approach this day will make a difference in the outcome of the day. “…the joy of the Lord is our strength!”

“But, as it is written, ‘What no eye has seen, nor ear heard, nor the heart of man imagined, what God has prepared for those who love Him”— 1 Corinthians 2:9. I love surprises – who doesn’t, especially when they are better than we can even imagine. Today, look for what God has in store for you. Put your day in His hands. Give it to Him and see what happens!

But to all who did receive Him, who believed in His name, He gave the right to become children of God,” – John 1:12. Ever wondered what it would be like to be a prince or princess? Wonder no more. You are the child of the King of kings and Lord of lords. Walk in boldness today, for God is your Father!

“And the Lord will guide you continually and satisfy your desire in scorched places and make your bones strong; and you shall be like a watered garden, like a spring of water, whose waters do not fail.” – Isaiah 58:11. He will guide your feet today, if you let Him. I love the look of a watered garden. Today, be a watered garden.

Today, give your day to the Lord! Carry the look of a watered garden. Find your strength in Him, for in so doing, the joy of the Lord will follow you.

A part in this world

Today an acquaintance of mine passed away. I knew very little about him, other than his name and how much he loved birds and flowers. When he would come into the office, wheeling an oxygen tank with one hand and holding magazines in the other, he’d entice me to come sit with him. “I have the lastest Bird’s and Blooms issue,” he’d smile and tap the seat next to him.

Who could resist?

I didn’t know he had been in the hospital for the past two weeks. He may have told me he had children but I don’t remember. And when I heard the news he had gone to live with the Lord, I wept as if I’d known him, as if he played a significant role in my life.

The last time we talked, we thumbed through the spring addition. He was planning to make bird feeders. The prototype was in his mind. I told him all about my husband’s bees and promised him a jar of honey; but, I never got it to him. I wanted to remember what his bird feeder would look like and why it was so special but I couldn’t.

Every day we encounter people – some of whom we will never see again. What impression do we leave? How do they imprint our lives and how do we imprint theirs?

Tonight as I drove home, I remembered something he said to me. At the time it seemed simple enough, but now, I realize how significant his words were to me. As if he knew somehow what my heart was feeling; the struggles I was facing; and the deep grief within. He told me something he’d learned about birds, “You know what, Ms. Nora? Birds do not sing because they are supposed to sing, birds sing because they have a song to sing.”

I really think he meant life. We all have a role to play here. We do not live because we are supposed to live, we live because we have a part in this world.

Play your part well.

Funeral services are scheduled Saturday for 39-year old Chris Watts of Tiger. Watts died on Wednesday while in the custody of the Habersham County Sheriff’s Office. He was arrested on a parole violation.

No official cause of death has been released but family members say officials told them he died of “cardiac arrest.” Habersham County Coroner Kasey McEntire says he’s waiting on the State Medical Examiner’s findings before issuing a final ruling. He says that could take up to 90 days.
