Baldwin Police are stepping up their patrols in the Meadow Brook mobile home community after an armed man forced his way into a woman’s home.
It began with a knock on the door
Police were called to the scene at 9:42 a.m. Thursday after the woman reported a man knocked on her door, asked for someone by name, and then shouldered his way in.
Baldwin Police Officer Ryan Thomas says when he arrived the victim was sitting outside and was hysterical.
“The preliminary information that we gathered during my first interview with the victim, he (the suspect) was looking for a certain someone and he ended up having the wrong house,” Officer Thomas says.
The victim told police the suspect had a gun and says he threatened her with force if she called for help. He then ran and fled the scene.
Cornelia police officers and Habersham County deputies assisted Baldwin Police in their search for the man. “We attempted to K9 track but we believe the suspect left the area in a vehicle,” Thomas says.
Officers suspended their search after several hours. Police have not released a description of the suspect.
A community on edge
Thomas says the woman was not physically assaulted but she was shaken up by the incident.
People who were in the area at the time of the search expressed concern about the heavy law enforcement presence. The Meadow Brook property manager asked police to step up patrols in the area to put residents at ease.
“We’re going to be in here several times a shift, both daytime and nighttime,” Officer Thomas says. “Our response time is under three minutes for the City of Baldwin so we’re going to be in here pretty heavy until we can find this guy.”
