ATHENS, Ga. — Three more suspects have been arrested in the death of 22-year-old Antonio Jewell of Winterville, bringing the total number of people charged in the case to six.
Jewell was shot and killed during an attempted armed robbery on November 6 in the 100 block of Madison Avenue. Athens-Clarke County Police Lt. Katie Jenkins said officers found him lying on the sidewalk with life-threatening injuries. He died at the scene despite efforts by emergency personnel to save him.
Six arrested in connection to the case
ACCPD initially arrested three Athens men — Samtavious Clark, 23, Jeremiah Gresham, 18, and Dion Nesbitt, 18 — on murder charges. Each also faces charges of armed robbery, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, and criminal street gang activity. Detectives determined the shooting was tied to an attempted robbery.
As the investigation continued, police made three more arrests. On November 24, officers arrested Dermetris Allen, 19, and Christian Hull, 18, both of Athens. On November 25, investigators arrested Chedric Stroud, 19, also of Athens.
All three face the same charges as the original suspects: murder, armed robbery, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, and criminal street gang activity.
A legacy of grief and hope
Jewell was a student-athlete and a 2022 graduate of Clarke Central in Athens. His family remembers him as “a proud Gladiator—an athlete, a teammate, and a young man who brought heart, dedication, and kindness to everything he did.” His mother, LaToya Jewell, launched an online fundraiser after his death to support the youth foundation she established in 2024 in memory of her late husband.
The ALJ Foundation, named for Antonio Lamar Jewell, supports youth initiatives. The family said on GoFundMe that, “AJ’s passing further underscores the urgent need to uplift the ALJ Foundation’s mission to end gun violence and to provide positive, empowering outlets for the youth in our community.”
As of November 26, the fundraiser had raised nearly half of its intended $6,500 goal.
Police say the investigation into the younger Jewell’s murder remains active. Anyone with information is asked to contact Detective Christina Bradshaw at [email protected], 762-400-7323, or Detective David Harrison at [email protected], 762-400-7361.
