TOCCOA, Ga. — Authorities are investigating after human remains were found Wednesday evening in a tent located in a wooded area behind Alban Court.

According to Stephens County Deputy Coroner Lee Woody, Stephens County 911 received a call at around 7:06 p.m. on November 26 about a possible deceased person in the area. When Toccoa police officers arrived, they entered the woods and located the tent. Inside, they discovered human remains.

Woody said the condition of the body indicates the individual had likely been dead for “an extended period of time.”

The Toccoa Police Department is conducting a full investigation. The Stephens County Coroner’s Office took possession of the remains, which will be transported to the GBI Medical Examiner’s Office this week for positive identification and autopsy.
