A suspect accused of multiple burglaries in parts of Elbert County is now facing charges, according to the sheriff’s office.
Investigators with the Elbert County Sheriff’s Office arrested Gregory Brian Simmons on Tuesday, Jan. 28, and charged him with four counts of burglary in the second degree – one count of felony theft by taking and one count of possession of tools for the commission of a crime (also a felony).
Between Jan. 14 and Jan. 28, police say property owned by the Elbert County Gun Club was burglarized multiple times, with several items stolen, valued at approximately $8,000. During the same period, property belonging to Mathews Granite was also burglarized, and items valued at an estimated $4,000 were taken.
Following these incidents, investigators set up surveillance equipment to monitor the locations. After several days, authorities gathered information that allowed patrol deputies to make contact with Simmons as he was leaving a property where items had been stolen. This led to his arrest.
Through diligent efforts, sheriff’s office investigators were able to recover most of the stolen property, according to authorities.
The investigation is ongoing, and police say additional charges may be forthcoming.
