Board of Education Powers on Through Power Outage

The storm that swept through Clarkesville on Monday left the Habersham County Board of Education in the dark. Literally. the power went out at the the school system’s administrative offices where some fifty people had gathered for a BOE meeting. The meeting went on, almost without a hitch. By the lights of a lantern and cell phones, the Board reviewed and accepted several reports. Only a few reports on the packed agenda had to be delayed due to the weather.

The big news of the night came from the school’s accounting office which reported the system ended FY2015 with a $1.6 million surplus. See School System Ends Fiscal Year in the Black

The School Transportation Department submitted a request to the board to approve $81,699 for the purchase of three new school buses. The Facilities Department informed the board there were 53 changes from carpet to vinyl flooring throughout the school system before the school year started. Board member Don Corbett complimented the Facilities Department for making “such an improvement in such a short period of time.”
