Qualifying begins Monday for Nov. 8 special elections

Qualifying begins Monday for candidates in the November 8 special elections in Alto, Clarkesville, and Demorest. The elections are being held to fill the unexpired terms of the previous office holders.

The Alto Post 1 council seat formerly held by Turner Griffith and the Post 5 seat previously held by P.J. Huggins are vacant. The winners of these races will serve the remaining three years of their terms from November 15, 2022, to December 31, 2025.

Clarkesville is looking to fill the Post 2 city council seat formerly held by Roxie Barron. There is one year remaining in her term. The winning candidate will serve from December 5, 2022, through December 31, 2023.

Demorest is looking to fill the unexpired term of Nathan Davis. He resigned with a year left to serve. The special election is to fill the seat from November 15, 2022, to December 31, 2023.

Qualifying begins Monday, August 1, and runs through Friday, August 5. It will be held at the Habersham County Elections Office in the county administration building at 130 Jacob’s Way, Clarkesville. Qualifying hours are from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 8:30 a.m. to Noon on Friday (except for a one-hour lunch break).

Qualifying fees are $35 for Alto, $18 for Clarkesville, and $100 for Demorest. Cash payments are not accepted – checks or money orders only.
