The sign is up, and so is the anticipation among shoppers as TJ Maxx prepares to open its doors in Cornelia. The national off-price retailer is in the process of moving into its new store in the Habersham Village Shopping Center on Business U.S. 441.
“TJ Maxx is coming along nicely. We have said previously that they should be open by the end of summer or early fall and they are still on track with that schedule,” says Cornelia Community Development Director Jessie Owensby.
TJ Maxx joins Planet Fitness and Bealls Outlet in the space formerly occupied by Kmart.
Across the parking lot in the Village shopping center is another ‘coming soon’ addition.
“Dunkin Donuts had to submit new site plans with a couple of changes on it,” explains Owensby, “so they had to be reviewed again. They will be ready for permitting by the end of this week and can start construction back once they’ve obtained their building permits.”
Doughnut lovers can get their fill in Clarkesville while waiting on the new DD in Cornelia. The old Yakimono Express is being renovated into a Dunkin Donuts and it’s scheduled to open in June.
Recent voter-approved referendums paved the way for liquor stores to operate in Cornelia and Clarkesville, and both are getting them. A package store is being put in at the old Fred’s building on East Louise Street in Clarkesville. Cornelia’s first package store is due to open mid-summer in the Tractor Supply/Goody’s shopping center.
“Ross is also coming to the old Goody’s space in that same shopping center,” says Owensby. “Their plans have been reviewed and approved and are ready for permitting.”
