Area seniors can look forward to learning about opportunities to improve their wellness this week when the Habersham County Senior Wellness Center will host a regional senior health fair.
Seniors from the Northeast Georgia region, not just Habersham, are encouraged to attend Thursday’s health fair. The event will include free health screenings, free consultations and a raffle, as well as participating businesses and organizations available to provide information on wellness for seniors.
“What was most important to me is finding vendors who can really benefit my seniors,” Senior Center Director Kathy Holcomb said. “Not just somebody trying to convince you to change this program to this program, it was important to me to find people who can make a difference in their life.”
Holcomb plans to have Medicaid, legal services, MedLink and disability resources available at the event alongside wellness businesses like A-Zinc, Pro Comfort Shoes, American Hearing Aid, Juice Plus and more.
It won’t just be health organizations that will be available to seniors, though. Holcomb has also invited representatives from the Habersham County Board of Commissioners, county transportation, Habersham Housing Authority and Habersham County Elections Office to provide seniors with relevant information and hear their questions and concerns.
“My goal is to find opportunities for these people to be able to grow and get the information they needed from somebody sitting right here,” Holcomb said.
Holcomb is expecting a busy day, where she’s hopeful she will be able to reach area seniors and enroll them in programs that can help them live healthy, safe lives.
“I really want [seniors] to come out and visit that day, and walk through and pick up some brochures and learn more about what’s going on,” Holcomb said. “And stop by the commissioner’s booth and talk to them as well. Just come out and be a part of what we’re doing.”
The event is set for Thursday, March 31, from 9:30 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. at the Habersham Senior Wellness Center in Demorest located at 217 B Scoggins Drive in Demorest.
