Man faces numerous charges after pointing handgun at deputy

Hall County deputies arrested a Manchester, Georgia, man after he allegedly pointed a handgun at one of them. The alleged incident happened after the deputy responded to a domestic dispute earlier this week in the eastern part of Hall County.

According to the Hall County Sheriff’s Office, the officer responded to a woman’s complaint at home in the 4000 block of Country Lane. The woman said Schmidt was there and was refusing to leave.

“When the deputy arrived, Schmidt ran to the front door and pushed his way inside the house,” a press release from the sheriff’s office states. The deputy observed Schmidt jumping on top of a teenaged girl inside the doorway and heard screaming. The deputy pursued Schmidt into the home, but Schmidt escaped through another entrance and into a neighbor’s yard.

“The deputy caught up to Schmidt and took him to the ground after giving numerous commands for him to stop running,” the sheriff’s office says. “During the struggle, Schmidt continued to refuse the deputy’s commands and pointed a handgun at him.”

The deputy got the pistol away from Schmidt, tossed it out of reach, and held him in place until more deputies arrived to help with the arrest. They took Smith into custody without further incident and charged him with a host of violations, including:

• Aggravated assault on a peace officer
• Simple battery under the Family Violence Act
• Criminal trespass
• Possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime
• Obstruction-resisting officer/arrest

As of Friday, Oct. 23, Schmidt remained in the Hall County jail. The girl he allegedly attacked was 16. It’s not clear if she knew him.

No one was injured. The investigation continues.
