Mt. Airy woman charged with child molestation

An accused child molester is out of jail on bond after turning herself into authorities last week.

26-year-old Jennifer Paige Gibbs was arrested on March 20. She’s charged with two counts of child molestation, one count of aggravated child molestation, and one count of sexual battery.

On December 31, 2018, the Habersham County Sheriff’s Office says investigators were informed of a possible child molestation that occurred.

“Habersham County Sheriff’s Office Investigators were able to confirm through multiple interviews that there were multiple underage victims and that the assaults had occurred over a several month period in Habersham County,” says HCSO Lt. Matthew Wurtz.

On March 20, the Habersham County Sheriff’s Office Investigation Division obtained warrants for Gibbs and that’s when she turned herself in.

As to why it took investigators nearly three months to arrest Gibbs, Wurtz says cases like this take time.

“Due to the nature of the crime, this type of case takes time to process, do the interviews with the victims, the accused, and any witnesses,” he says. Investigators also have to gather and process “any type of evidence we may be required to have prior to the arrest of the accused.”

Gibbs was released from jail on $35,000 bond on March 22. She’s required to wear an ankle monitor.

Authorities say the victims were known to Gibbs personally. They will not say how many alleged victims there were.

“This is still an ongoing investigation and no further details can be released at this time,” Wurtz says.
