Some iconic Disney characters will take to the stage in North Habersham Middle School’s production of The Little Mermaid JR.

The musical is based on the Broadway production and movie The Little Mermaid. It’s set in King Triton’s underwater kingdom and features his youngest daughter, Ariel, who longs to be human. Ariel must make a deal with the evil sea witch, Ursula, to become human for just three days and convince Prince Eric to fall in love with her.

“This musical is filled with fast-paced, upbeat songs that help tell this love story,” says NHMS theater and chorus teacher Rachel LeGrand. She says there are many strong female performers at the school and she chose this musical to showcase their talents. “We  also wanted to choose a musical with a story that most people in the community would recognize and know,” she adds.

Under the Sea

Staging a musical that, in large part, takes place ‘under the sea’ poses some special challenges. The stage crew will use fabric, streamers, and maybe even bubbles to differentiate underwater scenes from those on land.

Over 100 NHMS students are involved in the production which opens Thursday, May 10th.

Seventh graders, too, are participating in the musical. “The Little Mermaid JR” was chosen to showcase the students’ many talents.

“This is a show that is great for the whole family!” enthuses LeGrand. “It is upbeat and exciting with something for everyone – love, dance parties, mystery, action, and so much more!”

In addition to an evening of wholesome, fun, family entertainment, LeGrand says the production is an opportunity for the community to see what’s happening in Habersham’s middle school arts programs. It’s also a chance for students to build friendships and grow in confidence. “There is such a feeling of accomplishment and joy when you stand on stage during a live performance. So many hours of hard work go into making that moment happen, and it certainly pays off,” she says.

LeGrand credits the students, their parents, and her NHMS colleagues with making the production possible. She hopes the community will support their efforts by showing up for the show at North Habersham Middle School on Thursday, May 10th and Friday, May 11th.

Tickets will be available at the door each night. The cost is $5 for adults and $3 for students. Cash or check will be accepted. The doors will open at 6:45 p.m. and the show begins 7 p.m.

The school is located at 1500 Wall Bridge Road in Clarkesville.
