Miss Martha Bird Garrison of Clarkesville, GA passed away on April 9, 2018, just 23 days shy of her 102nd birthday.
Miss Garrison was born on May 2, 1916 in Chester S.C. to Dr. William Henry Garrison and Martha Collins Bird Garrison of Clarkesville. Miss Garrison led a remarkable life, leaving a lasting impression on everyone who knew her.
After graduating from Clarkesville High school she attended Wesleyan College earning her degree in 1938. She taught school in Habersham County until joining the Army at the beginning of World War 2. She worked in physical therapy at the Air Force base in Columbia, S.C. until the end of the war. She then furthered her education at Duke University and Vanderbilt and earned her physical therapy degree at the Medical College of Virginia in 1952.
Miss Garrison worked in a Children’s hospital in Nashville and in Atlanta with Easter Seals, later returning to Habersham County when she established the physical therapy department at Habersham County Medical Center.
She was a lifetime member of Clarkesville 1st Baptist Church where she was actively involved in many church ministries. She delivered food for Meals on Wheels and supported various charities that were near to her heart.
Miss Garrison is survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
