Maison Clouatre of Mt. Airy is one of 11 students statewide to receive a scholarship from the state’s electric co-ops. The Habersham Central High School senior was awarded the Walter Harrison Scholarship which is sponsored by the electric co-ops in Georgia, including Habersham EMC. Scholarships were awarded based on academic achievements, extracurricular activities and community service.
Clouatre competed among 78 other students for the scholarship. It provides $1,000 for secondary education expenses.
“Each year the quality of applicants for the scholarship continues to go up,” says Susan Baker, Manager of Marketing and Communications with Habersham EMC. “The judges noted how competitive the field was this year, making Maison’s selection in the top 11 quite the nod to his scholastic achievements.”
Clouatre has been honored as the STAR Student at Habersham Central High School as well as a Governor’s Honors semi-finalist in math, has earned his academic letter, has been awarded a Georgia Certificate of Merit and has earned the highest achievement in AP Chemistry at his high school.
Outside of class, he has been active in Advocates for Special Olympics, Mu Alpha Theta, the school newspaper at his high school, his high school’s theater and Key Club, among other activities.
Maison is the son of Mitchell and Ashley Clouatre of Mt. Airy. He plans to attend Mercer University in Macon and pursue a degree in Electrical Engineering, where he also wants to research systems that could supply electricity to areas of the world that do not currently have it.
The scholarship is named in honor of Walter Harrison, a pioneer in the rural electricity movement and a leader at the local, state and national levels in electric cooperative programs. It is funded by Georgia’s 41 electric cooperatives, including Habersham EMC, the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association and the Georgia Rural Electric Supply Corp. Since 1987, approximately $202,000 has been awarded to students through the Walter Harrison Scholarship fund.
