Thousands without power in northeast Georgia

This GA Power map shows regional outages reported as of 11:30pm Monday, Feb. 16

Georgia Power and Habersham EMC crews are working to restore power to thousands of people in Habersham and neighboring counties who lost electricity due to downed trees and power lines. As of 11:30pm Monday, Georgia Power reported 20 scattered outages in Habersham affecting more than 1,200 customers. Nearly 3,000 HEMC customers in Habersham are now in the dark.

HEMC customers started losing power shortly after 8pm after a long day of sleet and freezing rain.  The most widespread outage is in the southern end of the county near the Hall County border where 1,359 customers are without electricity.

The story is similar for GA Power customers. 653 customers are without power in Alto while several hundred more are experiencing outages in Cornelia, Demorest and Baldwin. Clarkesville has not reported any widespread power outages.

Next door in White County 4,000 customers are waiting to get their lights turned back on.

The outages aren’t just isolated to northeast Georgia. GA Power is working to repair 807 outages affecting close to 80,000 customers state-wide.
