Black ice advisory in effect until noon Tuesday

The National Weather Service has issued another winter weather advisory for black ice. This advisory is in effect from 6 p.m. Monday until noon Tuesday, Jan. 10.

A similar advisory was in effect Sunday overnight into Monday due to sub-freezing temperatures.

Icy spots on roads, bridges and walkways will make travel hazardous. Areas that will be extremely susceptible to black ice will be elevated roadways and off ramps, shaded areas and secondary roads.

The Georgia Emergency Management advises if you have to drive, slow down, leave extra room between cars and assume all wet spots on the road are ice.

If you do hit a patch of black ice follow these safety tips:

  1. Don’t hit the brakes!
  2. Keep the steering wheel steady.
  3. Lift your foot off the accelerator.
  4. Don’t overcorrect. If you feel your vehicle slide, gently steer in the same direction. Steering in the opposite direction could cause your vehicle to skid or spin out.
  5. Remain calm. While sliding on ice can be frightening, panicking makes it worse by increasing the potential for an improper response.
