Volunteers for Literacy of Habersham County has re-scheduled the 9th Annual Rubber Duck Race for Saturday, September 12. The race will be held at 3:45 p.m. at Pitts Park during the re-scheduled Mountain Laurel Festival. Traditionally, the race is held in May on Mountain Laurel Day or as in the past two years, in July, prior to Clarkesville’s Red, White and Tunes event.
“Our hearts go out to all who have been adversely impacted by COVID-19 in our community,” says VFL Director Phylecia Wilson. “We look forward, as everyone does, to more normal times when our community can come back together again. With that in mind, we decided to reschedule rather than cancel this year’s duck race. We look forward to joining with the Mountain Laurel Festival which we hope will be a time of community celebration.”
Tickets to enter the race can now be purchased online at www.vflhabersham.com, on the VFL Facebook page or from any board member. Tickets are $5 each or five for $20. The first duck to “swim” to the finish line on September 12 wins $1000. The prize for second place is $500 and third is $250. As always, VFL board members and volunteers will be selling tickets from their booth next to the Clarkesville gazebo at the Mountain Laurel Festival until 2:30 p.m. All proceeds benefit programs that promote and foster literacy in Habersham County.
“September will be a great time of year to enjoy the parade, vendors, and of course, the duck race in the Soque River!,” says 2020 VFL Rubber Duck Race Chair Johnny Bailey. “We thank our sponsors and the community for their continued support of our literacy programs in Habersham County.”
In addition to the duck race, VFL will hold the 3rd Annual Dec a Duck Contest at 1 p.m. on festival day. All duck race sponsors are eligible to enter with a minimum $100 sponsorship. Email or call firstname.lastname@example.org or 706-949-3157 for more information.
If due to weather, high water in the Soque River, or COVID-19 the race cannot be held, winners will be determined by a drawing on September 12.
