Emergency workers battle it out for gridiron glory and a good cause

The 6th Annual Battle of the Heroes took to the turf at Raider Stadium Saturday to raise money for charity. Fire and EMS personnel from Habersham and Banks counties took on first responders from Hall County. Hall won bragging rights for the year, beating the Hab/Banks team 38-30.

Winners on and off the turf

Winning bragging rights is part of the fun, but the real purpose of the game is to raise money for the Easton Foundation. The foundation provides programs and scholarships for local youth. It was established in memory of Easton Singleton, a 17-year old Habersham Central High School football player who was killed in a car wreck on April 25, 2012.

“This game so important, not only to me and the foundation, but to all of the 911 representatives who participate,” says Easton Foundation founder Casey Lizama. “It brings the community together in a safe environment where people get to come together and enjoy the food and watch a game.

Lizama says it’s good for people, especially youth, to see first responders in a relaxed setting as opposed to only seeing them in an emergency. “It shows the community how we can pull together to support our foundation and support our teens in North Georgia.”
